I am Heidi, I am a Certified & Accredited Dog Trainer with a BSc (hons) in Animal Science and Welfare based in Kings Lynn and Cambridgeshire. I am fully insured with Pet Plan Sanctuary and have a DBS Check, Pet First Aid and Dog Law Certificaion.

At Transpawmaton dog training we specialise in reactivity and rescue, helping to build trusting relationships between owners and their dogs. We are committed to spreading awareness about the importance of kind, force free and fun, enjoyable dog training. By rewarding desired behaviours instead of punishing undesirable  behaviours, you promote yours dogs confidence and reinforce your relationship based on trust and safety.

We have 7 years experience working within a rescue environment so are passionate about helping owners with their new or existing rescue dogs, dogs who struggle reactivity.

We provide 1-2-1 training to owners offering a puppy plan & individual sessions as well as, block sessions and training packages for more extensive training and support.

Since 2016 I have worked within a rescue and rehoming centre. Within this line of work you experience first hand both the trauma and the most rewarding. It opens your eyes to the sheer volume of dogs that struggle with a vast range of behavioural problems on a daily basis through their past experiences, which many new dog owners struggle to cope with. Meaning that some of the dogs are returned to the kennels, through no fault of their own.

Reactive behaviours are often viewed as aggressive, but you may also notice your dog becoming overwhelmed and shutting down.

This is a response frequently seen in shelter environments, where dogs are stressed to the point that they hide in the back corner of their kennel, failing to acknowledge people nearby.

The most important thing to remember with a reactive/anxious dog is that these behaviours does not mean your dog can never be a loving, family pet.

My own dog Pansy had a very difficult start in life, coming from a puppy farm where she was neglected, continuously bred from and severely under socialised with people and the outside world. 

Experiencing such a stressful 5 years of her life, Pansy has struggled with anxiety and fear related behaviours. Including not knowing how to walk on a lead, noise anxiety and severe separation anxiety. 

She is now flourishing in a home and is a prime example of a rescue when given the time, patience, management and training can gradually overcome fear related behaviours. There will always be an element of trauma that she has suffered which will effect some day to day tasks, but management is key in her rehabilitation.

Reactivity is the one of the most common behavioural problem experienced by dog owners. In reactivity training the most effective way to address the behaviour is through desensitisation and counter-conditioning your dog to react differently to the trigger.

Reactivity doesn’t mean that a dog wants to or enjoys acting out in the presence of a trigger.  Instead, it indicates that your dog is to stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed by the trigger’s presence that their reaction escalates into unwanted behaviours.  Reactivity is a sign that your dog is having a hard time in that situation and doesn’t know how to respond in a healthy way. 

 As dog trainers it is our job to help you as owners to condition your dog to better respond to their triggers. Not only will this make life with your dog more manageable, but it’s also crucial for your dog’s mental health! 

With management and conditioning a reactive dog CAN live a happy, safe and fulfilling life.
